Successful investing requires more than selecting good companies. It requires portfolio construction, risk management, and a willingness to adapt as markets change.

Financial markets have become dramatically more competitive. The widespread availability of information, commission-free trading, and the rapid growth of ETFs have made it increasingly difficult for traditional active managers to consistently outperform by relying solely on individual stock selection.

Northlake was established in 2004 to pursue a different approach – combining diversified ETF portfolios with selective individual stock investments when we believe they offer meaningful long-term opportunity.

Our investment philosophy combines three elements: (1) Broad diversification through core ETF holdings, (2) Active portfolio positioning using market capitalization and style models developed with Ned Davis Research, and (3) A concentrated portfolio of carefully researched individual stocks when we identify compelling long-term opportunities.

This approach seeks to improve long-term risk-adjusted returns while maintaining the transparency, liquidity, and tax efficiency that ETFs provide.

When we invest in individual companies, we follow a “narrow but deep” research process, preferring a small number of high-conviction ideas over broad diversification for its own sake.
